Mitchell Falls

Mitchell Falls is a small waterfall located on private property below the summit of Mount Mitchell. The falls, and the mountain, were named for Dr. Elisha Mitchell, who was one of the first to climb and accurately measure the mountain, leading to the discovery that it is the highest mountain in the East. Dr. Mitchell died at the falls while trying to descend the mountain on one of his survey trips.

Mitchell Falls is located on private property and is not accessible to the public. However, on rare occasions, group hikes have been conducted to the falls by special permission.
